JPG to SVG vs PNG to SVG

JPG to SVG vs PNG to SVG. A transparent PNG can be traced without a rectangular background.

The quick answer

A transparent PNG can be traced without a rectangular background. Transparent pixels and white pixels are different: preserving alpha keeps transparent areas, while removing white can also remove white details inside your artwork.

JPG to SVG vs PNG to SVG: what matters

Use SVG for icons, diagrams, and logos that benefit from scalable paths. Use PNG for pixel artwork that needs alpha transparency or a faithful raster representation.

Compare the actual exported file sizes. A complex traced photograph can be larger as SVG than as PNG, even though the vector has no fixed pixel dimensions.

A practical png transparency workflow

  1. Use the original PNG with alpha transparency. Screenshots often flatten transparency into a solid background.
  2. Choose a small palette. Leave white removal off when white lettering or highlights belong to the design.
  3. Check the checkerboard preview for a surviving background rectangle and missing interior details.
  4. Place the downloaded SVG over light and dark backgrounds in your editor before publishing it.

Check these details before you export

  • JPEG has no alpha channel, so a white JPEG background can become a filled path.
  • White removal is color filtering rather than intelligent subject segmentation.
  • Anti-aliased edges may retain pale pixels. A cleaner source is often better than more trace colors.

Where this workflow stops

The tool does not separate subjects from complex photographic backgrounds. Remove those backgrounds in a suitable editor first.

For a first local trace, use the JPEG to SVG converter. If you are working with transparent artwork, read the PNG transparency guide. Keep an original file so you can compare your changes.

A few useful answers

Before you hit download

Does SVG conversion recover image quality?

No. Tracing makes scalable paths that approximate the source. It cannot recover lost details, recreate the original font, or guarantee a lossless conversion.

Do I need an account or paid plan?

No. The browser tools are free and do not require an account. There is no conversion subscription or payment checkout.

Are my images uploaded or stored?

The tool processes selected file pixels locally in your browser. There is no upload endpoint or conversion history database. The host still receives ordinary website requests.

Which files can I use?

The image tools accept JPEG, PNG and WebP up to 12 MB. Images above 32 megapixels are rejected; tracing resizes larger images to a maximum 1200-pixel side to limit complexity.
